Using Nero to add track start points when burning a set to a CD.

This page will help explain how to use Nero to set up tracks on your CD's so you can skip track to track when playing trance sets.  You can use either the cue times or adjusted cue times to establish track starting points and do so without a pause between each track so the set flows smoothly track to track.  These instructions are limited to establishing the track start points and do not get into entering text.  That may come later.  Now to the set up.
-
Depending on the version of Nero you have you are able to place track start points on your cd when you burn a dj set to the cd.  The instructions below are for Nero 6.  Other versions may or may not have these features or may use slightly different steps.

After you open Nero click on the musical note (audio) and then click on ' make audio cd'.

This brings up a new window with Nero's File Browser on the right and a track list window on the left.   Using the broswer locate the set you want on the cd and drop/drag it to the left side under the track column.  Nero will do a little analysis and then show the set as Track 1 with the title and duration and a 2 second pause.

Now here's the fun part...... Right click the set and in the drop down window click Properties.   A new window will come up.  Click the Indexes, Limits, Split tab.

A new window will pop up and Nero will lay out the entire set in this window along a time line.   This will take a few minutes or longer depending on the MBs of the set.  In this window under the time line section on the left you will see a Positions window with  start and end times.  After Nero finishes laying out the set in the time line window you can begin to set your cue or track start times.

From a set listing provided by the dj or set producer or from your own timing find the start of the second track.   Let's say the start of the second track is 4 minutes and 25 seconds.   Using the mouse, left click close to the 4:25 point on the time line.  This does not have to be exact as we will now edit the time.

When you left click the time line it leaves a line at the point you clicked.   Now click the 'New Index' button below.  This changes the line to a thick yellow line.  Now click the Edit botton and an edit window will pop up.  Enter the correct minute and second in the windows provided.   Leave Frames as they are or change them to zero.  Now click OK.

Continue the process above until you enter all the start times of the remaining tracks.

Now click the Split at Index Positions button.  A pop up window will come up.  Click OK and that window will go away.

Now click the Apply button in the lower right of the window.    A window will come up and state:   The selected track will be split into ## tracks.  Do you really want to do this?  If the number of tracks is OK then click OK.  Otherwise, you may need to start over or perhaps you skipped a track and need to enter it using the process above and then come back to this step.

Click OK and click OK again in the pop up window.  And, now we are back to the original Browser / Track screen.  The tracks will be numbered.  The titles will all be the title of the set.  Naming each track is another subject.   However, look at the Pause column.

You will see there is a 2 second pause for each track.  We only want the 2 second pause at the first track.   You can right click each track - except the first as it has to have a starting 2 second pause - click Properties and change the pause to zero seconds.  Or, you can highlight all the tracks 2 through the end, click Properties and do one pause change for all the tracks highlighted.  Now you should see a two second pause for only the first track.

From here you can burn your track as normal.  A couple suggestions when burning to CD's.   Turn off access to the internet and turn off programs that access the internet.  If your computer begins an interaction with the internet such as updating the virus definitions or updating windows or whatever, this can cause a blip in the burn process and affect the results.  Second, lower the burn rate to 8X or 4X.  These slower speeds take longer to burn but don't fail as  often as burning at higher rates.

If you know of other programs and processes for entering track data on CD's leave a comment about this in the comment section for others to read.
